Les Flâneurs: Salon and School of Paris Painters from the 19th and 20th Centuries
A new exhibition at Kodner Gallery celebrates the art of strolling through Paris
St. LOUIS, MISSOURI — Kodner Gallery presents Les Flâneurs, an exhibition exploring the vibrant street life of Paris through the eyes of Salon and School of Paris painters. On view August 14 – October 24, 2025, the exhibition brings together paintings, prints, and drawings from the 19th and 20th centuries that capture the fleeting beauty of modern urban life.
At the heart of the exhibition is the flâneur—the leisurely observer who wanders the city, attuned to its visual poetry and everyday rhythms. From bustling boulevards to quiet corners, these works invite visitors to experience Paris as artists once did: strolling, watching, and reflecting.
The exhibition highlights include the perspectives of 19th-century artists such as Maurice Utrillo, Eugène Galien-Laloue, Maxime Boulard de Villeneuve, Constantin Guys, Edouard Cortès, Antoine Blanchard, and Paul-Émile Pissarro, each chronicling a city in transformation. Paired with a selection of Twentieth-century works by Bernard Buffet, Jean Dufy, Henri Matisse, and Marc Chagall, which reveal bold innovations in style and perception, reframing the city for the modern age.
