JONATHAN KODNER
Partner, Kodner Gallery & Fine Art Advisor
Jonathan Kodner is a highly respected fine art advisor and partner of Kodner Gallery, internationally recognized for his expertise in Impressionism, Modernism, Western Art, and Regionalism. With more than three decades of experience working with private collectors, estates, and institutions, Jonathan is known for his discerning eye, broad connoisseurship, and commitment to scholarship-driven evaluation and placement of fine art.
A graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute (B.F.A., 1986), Jonathan began his professional career at the Missouri Historical Society, serving as Exhibition Technician and later as Assistant Curator of Art. His early institutional work strengthened his dedication to research, authenticity, and museum-level standards — foundations that continue to define his practice.
Jonathan joined his father, Martin Kodner, in the family gallery soon after, helping build one of the Midwest’s most respected fine art inventories and furthering its legacy of careful connoisseurship. During this time, he became a member of the New England Appraisers Association and deepened his expertise in evaluating significant paintings, works on paper, and rare material.
In 2001, Jonathan and Martin were invited to participate in Antiques Roadshow during its St. Louis visit — Martin appraising paintings and Jonathan appraising drawings and fine prints — a reflection of the family’s longstanding reputation for expertise and integrity.
As a partner of Kodner Gallery, Jonathan continues to guide collectors and institutions with a commitment to authenticity, thoughtful placement, and long-term stewardship. His deep knowledge across movements and markets, combined with decades of hands-on experience, makes him a trusted resource for clients locally, nationally, and abroad.
DAVID KODNER
Partner, Kodner Gallery & Fine Art Advisor
David Kodner is a second-generation fine art advisor and partner of Kodner Gallery, bringing more than twenty-five years of experience in the acquisition, valuation, and long-term stewardship of Impressionist, Modern, Western, and Regionalist artwork. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin–Madison (B.A., 1994), David is a current member of the Appraisers Association of America and has completed the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) course and examination, the Congressionally recognized benchmark for appraisal ethics and methodology.
Working alongside collectors, families, estates, attorneys, and wealth advisors, David provides discreet, informed guidance on private sales, market and insurance valuations, charitable donation appraisals, and strategic planning for long-term collection management. His approach combines deep market insight with sensitivity to the personal and emotional considerations that accompany significant artworks.
David began his career under the mentorship of his father, Martin Kodner, whose scholarship and connoisseurship shaped the gallery’s reputation as a trusted fine art resource. Today, he helps lead the gallery into its third generation, emphasizing integrity, clarity, and personal service in every client relationship.
Beyond the gallery, David is deeply engaged in the cultural and philanthropic community, having served with organizations including the Young Friends of the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Collections Advisory Committee of the Mercantile Library at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, the Arts and Education Council, and the Missouri Chapter of the American Parkinson’s Disease Association, where he continues to support research and outreach initiatives.
David remains committed to advancing Kodner Gallery’s mission of scholarship, discretion, and long-term stewardship, helping clients preserve both the value and the legacy of their artwork.
Jonathan “Roo” Kodner, Jr.
Director
Jonathan “Roo” Kodner, Jr. represents the third generation of Kodner Gallery’s family legacy. Raised in St. Louis with a lifelong connection to the gallery, Roo developed an early appreciation for art, craftsmanship, and the rigorous scholarship that defines Kodner Gallery’s approach. He graduated from Missouri State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Art History, building a strong academic foundation that complements his hands-on experience in the field.
From a young age, Roo has been actively involved in every aspect of gallery operations — from research and cataloging to condition assessment, archiving, packing, shipping, lighting, installation, and client support. This breadth of experience has given him a comprehensive understanding of collection care, gallery logistics, and the fine art market.
Now serving as Director, Roo works closely with both David and Jonathan to support acquisitions, research initiatives, private sales, and the gallery’s long-term cataloging projects. His blend of academic training, practical expertise, and multigenerational insight plays a key role in advancing the gallery’s mission and shaping its future.
Dedicated, detail-oriented, and deeply aligned with the Kodner commitment to integrity and scholarship, Roo brings renewed energy and perspective as he helps guide the gallery into its next generation.
